TOURIST ATTRACTIONS:

Katavi National Park:
KATAVINP

Katavi National Park is situated in the southwest of Tanzania, on a high flood plain surrounding Lake Katavi, to the south of the Mahale Mountains. The major features of the Park include: Lake Katavi with its vast short grass flood plains in the north, the palm fringed Lake Chada in the southeast, and the Katuma River. Katavi boasts the highest hippo and crocodile population in the country. Four of the Big Five are found here: leopard, lion, elephant and buffalo.

Lake Tanganyika:

LTanganyika

It is estimated to be the second largest freshwater lake in the world by volume, and the second deepest, in both cases after Lake Baikal in Siberia. The lake is divided between four countries –Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Tanzania, Burundi,  and  Zambia, with the DRC (45%) and Tanzania (41%) having the majority of the lake.

The lake holds at least 250 species of cichlid fish and 150 non-cichlid species, most of which live along the shoreline up to a depth of approximately 600 feet. Lake Tanganyika is an important biological resource for the study of speciation in evolution.

Lake Rukwa:

The Lake Rukwa is the forth largest lake in Tanzania located on the south-western regions of Rukwa and Mbeya. It is within the Great Rift Valley system. It covers an area of about 2650 square kilometers between Lake Tanganyika and Nyasa, with average depth of 3 to 5 meters.

The shallow alkaline lake is cyclical in nature in terms of size which caused by the varying inflow of streams, for example, in some years in the past the lake shrank to a length of about 50 kilometers, years later it expanded to 135 kilometres long. However, Lake Rukwa has a large drainage basin in Tanzania with an area of 81,000 square kilometers. The lake does not have outflow. There are few rivers flowing in, these are river Rungwa, Wuku, Lukwate, Kikambo, Luika, Luiche, Kavuu, Chambua, and Songwe.

The lake is rich in wildlife, it has large concentration of crocodiles and hippopotamuses.

More than half of lake Rukwa lies within Katavi National Park.
