Iringa is located at 1635 m above sea level. The town is set on the slopes of a cliff over looking Ruaha River. Iringa is 500 kilometres west of Dar es Salaam.
Iringa was built during the 1890s by the German Army as a defensive base to be used against the Hehe uprising instigated by Chief Mkwawa. The fortress and headquarters of Chief Mkwawa were situated in Kalenga village.
Mtera Dam in Iringa acts as one of the most important source of electricity for the large part of the country.During the months of June, July, and August the town has low temperatures near freezing point. Iringa is a home town of Mkwawa, the vicious warrior who fought a gorilla war against German Colonial powers for eight years.
